Rock band Starving For Gravity (SFG) scored big with heavyweight industry talent judges at the summer 2008 Rock Music LAMN Jam, winning the contest and taking home over $10,000 in prizes.

Where are they now?

Intrepid reporter Winnie Jow tracked the band down at a recent LA Artwalk performance which also featured The Mike Officer Band, Southern Oracle and Gedina Jean.

LAMN Jam Winners

“LAMN has propelled SFG into several successes in 2008-2009 and we are proud to be associated with the organization,” says band manager Alex Kravetsky.

Since receiving rave reviews at the 2008 LAMN Jam from industry experts Angel Diva Music producer Jan Linder-Koda, Sixx AM guitarist / producer DJ Ashba, and STAR 98.7FM Program Director Darren Rose, this group of five guys are a winning streak.

This band won the Worldwide Contest for Rock Against Diabetes, the Hollywood Music Awards for Best Rock Artist and the Temecula Film & Music Festival “Best of Fest” award. Then the band caught the ear of platinum producer Michael Lloyd.

The Hit Song

Lloyd who has over 100 gold and platinum records to his name (Dirty Dancing soundtrack, Barry Manilow) and co-owns Curb Records, remembers bringing the band to his Beverly Hills studio. On hearing their acoustic performance of their prize-winning song “’Urgency” he says, “I immediately recognized the talent that the band had together and as individuals.”

Musicians In The Business

But these days talent is not enough.  Musicians and artists must also develop business acumen to survive and thrive.

“LAMN made me realize that I needed to be a complete package not just to have talent. Playing the LAMN Jam exposed us to a lot of people and other bands which helped us develop into a well-rounded group.” – Lucas Holter, Songwriter & Vocalist, SFG

“Through the LAMN Jam I have expanded my network. We found a great new drummer Mark Allee and it has me thinking about the business side of things. LAMN Jam has been a catalyst to think and re-think my career as a musician and a business man.” – Richard Nash, Keyboards, SFG

“LAMN allowed me the opportunity to be exposed to positive forces and reputable people in the industry.” – Mark Allee, Drummer, SFG

“LAMN Jam helped us after we won and not only did we get gear [prizes] but we connected with people who helped us develop our sound and fit into a niche in the industry.” – Brad Kovar, Songwriter / Guitarist, SFG

On Community

Starving For Gravity developed a niche by using the performance opportunities such as LAMN Jam and The Artwalk to expand their network.

“The Art Walk is a great way for artists to gain access to an audience,” says Dan Hegarty, drummer, Among The Infected and who works by day in Copyright Licensing & Royalties at Concord Music Group.
